Canton vs Woodstock, GA: Which One Fits You?

Canton and Woodstock are now almost the same size. Here is how they compare on the commute, property taxes, downtowns and lot sizes.

Canton and Woodstock are next-door neighbors on I-575, both in Cherokee County, and they're now almost exactly the same size. So when people ask me which one to choose, the answer usually comes down to three things: how far south you drive every day, what kind of lot you want, and which downtown feels like yours.

How do Canton and Woodstock compare at a glance?

Which one has the easier commute?

Woodstock, if you're heading south. It's about 9 miles closer to downtown Atlanta, and the main Woodstock exits on I-575 sit inside the stretch covered by the Northwest Corridor Express Lanes, which run up I-575 as far as Exit 11 at Sixes Road. From Canton, you drive in regular traffic until you reach Sixes Road.

The express lanes are reversible, carrying traffic toward Atlanta in the morning and away from it in the afternoon, and you'll need a Peach Pass to use them. If your commute runs north or against that flow, the difference between the two towns shrinks. My Canton commute guide has the full picture, and the best test is always driving your real route at your real time on a weekday.

What are the downtowns like?

Woodstock's downtown is built around The Park at City Center, home of the Northside Hospital-Cherokee Amphitheater, with restaurants and shops a short walk away.

Canton has Historic Downtown Canton on one side and The Mill on Etowah, a redeveloped 1900 denim mill that's now restaurants, shops and event space, on the other. Its calendar of First Fridays, markets and live music keeps downtown busy most of the year.

Both have a real downtown. The best way to choose is to spend a Friday night in each.

Where are the parks and trails?

Woodstock has been building out its Greenprints Trail System, which the city plans to grow past 60 miles. Olde Rope Mill Park has 14 miles of mountain bike trails, and Dupree Park is the city's oldest park.

Canton has Etowah River Park, 58 acres on the river with a canoe launch and an amphitheater, connected by trail to Heritage Park. Allatoona Lake, run by the US Army Corps of Engineers, is close to both.

How do property taxes compare?

Because both cities are in Cherokee County, the big pieces of the bill are identical: Cherokee County School District and county government together levy about 26.25 mills for 2026, on 40% of fair market value, and the county's homestead exemption applies in both.

The city levy is where they differ, and only for homes inside city limits. Canton's 2026 rate is 5.25 mills, and the city says that already includes fire service, so city homeowners don't pay the county's fire levy on top. Woodstock's rate was 5.565 mills in 2025.

Here's the part people miss: a Canton or Woodstock mailing address doesn't mean a home is inside city limits. Many homes with either address are in unincorporated Cherokee County and pay no city levy at all. Always check the specific address. My cost-of-owning guide walks through the math.

Which one is right for you?

Here's how I'd think about it.

I'd rather you see both than take my word for it. Watch my Canton neighborhood tours, then let's plan a day that covers a few neighborhoods in each.
