Canton vs Holly Springs, GA: Which One Fits You?
Holly Springs sits between Canton and Woodstock and even shares Canton's ZIP codes. Here is how the two compare on the commute, taxes and things to do.
Holly Springs is the town a lot of people drive through on I-575 without realizing they've left Canton. It sits right between Canton and Woodstock, it's about half Canton's size, and some Holly Springs homes even share Canton's ZIP codes. If you're looking in Canton, it's worth understanding how the two differ.
How do Canton and Holly Springs compare at a glance?
- Population: Holly Springs had 16,213 people in the 2020 census and an estimated 20,261 in 2025. Canton had 32,973 and an estimated 40,778, according to the US Census Bureau.
- Distance apart: about 5 miles.
- Distance to downtown Atlanta: about 35 miles from Holly Springs and about 39 from Canton.
- Schools: both are served by the Cherokee County School District.
- County: both are in Cherokee County, so the county and school tax rates are the same.
Why do Holly Springs and Canton share ZIP codes?
The Postal Service accepts "Holly Springs" as the city name for parts of 30114 and 30115, the same two ZIP codes that cover Canton. So a mailing address doesn't tell you which city a home is in, or whether it's in a city at all. Plenty of homes with either address are in unincorporated Cherokee County.
That matters because the city levy only applies inside city limits. Check the specific address before you compare tax bills.
Which one has the easier commute?
Holly Springs, by a bit. It's about 4 miles closer to downtown Atlanta, and it sits near Exit 11 at Sixes Road, the northern end of the Northwest Corridor Express Lanes. From most of Canton, you drive in regular traffic until you reach that point.
The express lanes are reversible toll lanes, carrying traffic toward Atlanta in the morning and away from it in the afternoon, and you need a Peach Pass to use them. My Canton commute guide has the detail.
What's there to do in Holly Springs?
Holly Springs is smaller and quieter, with a downtown that's still taking shape. The city's own spots include:
- J.B. Owens Park, 33 acres
- Barrett Memorial Park, 13 acres, home of the city's first off-leash dog park
- The Historic Train Depot, a former L&N railroad depot
- Holly Springs Town Center, the city's downtown redevelopment project
Canton, by comparison, has Historic Downtown Canton, The Mill on Etowah, a busy calendar of local events and Etowah River Park on the river. Since the two are only about 5 miles apart, living in one and spending your weekends in the other is easy.
How do property taxes compare?
The county and school portions are identical: about 26.25 mills combined for 2026, on 40% of fair market value, with Cherokee County's homestead exemption in both.
Inside city limits, Holly Springs levied 4.945 mills in 2025, and the county's fire levy is billed separately. Canton's 2026 rate is 5.25 mills, and the city says that already includes fire service, so Canton city homeowners don't pay the county fire levy on top. So Holly Springs has the lower headline rate, but once the county's 2.888-mill fire levy is added, a home inside Canton city limits can end up with the lower combined rate. Exemptions differ by city too, so compare real bills for real addresses. My cost-of-owning guide walks through the math.
Which one is right for you?
- If you want a smaller town with a shorter drive south, Holly Springs is worth a look.
- If you want a livelier downtown on your doorstep, or more choice in neighborhoods and lot sizes, Canton gives you more options.
- If you're torn, look at homes near the line between them. You can have Holly Springs' commute and still be minutes from downtown Canton.
