It is inexpensive, and it is genuinely one of my favorite things to eat in downtown Canton. On a menu where most plates land in the $14 to $24 range, a chowder is the cheapest possible way to find out whether a seafood kitchen actually knows what it is doing. This one does.
What to know before you go
The Salty Mule sits at 169 S Church Street, right in historic downtown Canton. The room leans beach bar rather than fine dining. It is lively, casual and social, with a coastal energy that feels a little unexpected once you remember you are standing in the North Georgia foothills.
The chowder comes as a cup or as a full bowl, so it works either as a starter before a tray of oysters or as the whole reason you came. A cup alongside their fish sandwich makes one of the better casual lunches downtown.
One thing worth planning around: the happy hour specials run Tuesday through Friday from 4 to 6 p.m., and they are dine-in only. People turn up expecting those prices to go, and that is not how it works.
