Step behind the scenes at Salty Mule, where fresh oysters, Cajun flavors, and beach vibes meet in the heart of downtown Canton's historic Church Street.

Where the Beach Meets the Mountains

There's no ocean anywhere near downtown Canton, but you'd never know it when you step inside the Salty Mule on Church Street. Opened in February 2021 by friends Scott Melton and William "Bubba" Latimer, this laid-back seafood restaurant brings a genuine coastal vibe to Cherokee County—right down to the nautical-inspired decor and the motto painted somewhere inside: "The beach is not always a place, sometimes it's a feeling."

The space itself has a story to tell. Long before it became Canton's go-to spot for oysters and po' boys, the building at 169 South Church Street housed a Colonial Stores grocery—part of an Atlanta-based chain that dotted small Southern towns in the 1950s and '60s. Now reclaimed and reimagined, the restaurant's simple but inviting decor lets the food take center stage.

What Makes the Salty Mule Special

Walk through the door and you'll immediately feel the relaxed, toes-in-the-sand atmosphere. There's live music on weekends—often a singer with a guitar—and the bar is stocked with creative cocktails, cold draft beer, and a curated selection of hot sauces that regulars love to talk about. But what keeps people coming back, week after week, is the seafood.

The oysters are legendary here. Fresh, plump, and shucked to order, they're available raw on the half shell or dressed up Rockefeller-style. On Thursdays and Sundays, the Salty Mule runs a dollar oyster special that draws crowds from all over North Georgia—some diners drive over an hour just for the deal. One reviewer called them "big and succulent, like they were just plucked out of the ocean," and another noted they're "much better than expected for a town in the foothills of Appalachia."

The menu leans heavily into Cajun and Creole traditions. You'll find conch fritters with a light, crispy batter; blackened mahi mahi that's cooked to perfection; Salty's Famous Red Shrimp & Grits; and a smash burger that locals say is one of the best in Canton. The fried clam strips, fish and chips made with beer-battered New England cod, and the Captain's Seafood Platter are all crowd favorites. Don't skip the sides, either—the bacon creamed corn and Brussels sprouts get just as much praise as the entrees.

For something a little different, try the gator tail. It's a unique menu item that even kids enjoy, and it's become something of a talking point for first-timers.

The People Behind the Food

What really sets the Salty Mule apart is the care that goes into every plate and the warmth of the staff. Diners consistently mention fast, friendly service and bartenders who remember your name. The vibe is casual enough for a solo lunch but lively enough for a birthday dinner with friends. It's the kind of place where the staff might pull out a magic trick at your table or strike up a conversation about the best way to dress an oyster.

Scott and Bubba's goal was simple: bring a taste of the beach to the mountains. Take a look inside in the video that accompanies this post, and you'll see they've done exactly that.
